What to Expect During Fitting

Installation

Learn about installation methods, expansion gaps, subfloor requirements, and best practices for fitting wood flooring in different situations.

    How is wood flooring fitted?

    Glued installation:
Ideal for larger areas, floors with underfloor heating, or continuous flooring across multiple rooms. The floor is glued directly to the subfloor using flexible adhesive. If your subfloor is made of floorboards, ply sheeting must be installed first.

    Floating installation:
Boards are glued or clicked together over an underlay without fixing them to the subfloor. Suitable for engineered wood flooring, not solid wood.

    What is a "floating floor"?

Floating floors are installed over an underlay. The planks are glued or clicked together but not attached to the subfloor. This method is recommended for engineered wood, not solid wood.

What is the required expansion gap around the flooring?

For glued installations, leave a 15mm gap. For floating installations, allow at least 5mm for every metre of width and 15mm for the length.

Should I fit the kitchen or wood floor first?

Fit the kitchen first, leaving kickboards and end panels off. Then, install the floor up to the cabinet legs and fit the kickboards. This method saves material and labour while protecting the floor in case of leaks.

Can I install wood flooring over linoleum?

Yes, but only if the linoleum is sound and securely adhered to the subfloor.

Keeping Your Floors Looking Their Best

Maintenance & Care

Keep your wood flooring looking its best with expert tips on cleaning, stain removal, finishes, and long-term care.

How do I care for oil-impregnated wood floors?

Use wood-floor soap for maintenance and Osmo Wash & Care Cleaner with an oil refresher if the floor dries out. Avoid harsh chemicals.

Which finish is best for homes with kids and pets?

Lacquered floors are durable, but oiled floors are easier to repair. Scratches on oiled floors can be spot-treated with light sanding and a couple of oil coats.

    Does sunlight affect wood flooring?

Yes, sunlight can change the colour of wood over time. Light woods may darken, while dark woods may lighten. Each type of wood has a unique ageing process.

How do I remove stains from wood floors?

Most stains can be sanded out. Severe stains (e.g., water, animal urine, hot fats) may be permanent.

The Facts Behind Your Flooring

Technical Details

Understand key technical aspects of wood flooring, including wear layers, underfloor heating compatibility, sanding, and natural variation in appearance.

    What is a wear layer?

The wear layer is the hardwood surface on engineered wood flooring. Typically 4-6mm thick, it can last decades and be sanded multiple times.

Can engineered wood floors be sanded and resurfaced?

Yes, but sanding removes about 1mm of the wear layer. Avoid heavy sanding machinery to prevent uneven surfaces.

Can wood flooring be installed with underfloor heating?

Solid wood is unsuitable, but engineered wood works well. Refer to our Underfloor Heating page for details.

Why doesn’t my floor look like the showroom sample?

Wood is a natural product, so each plank has unique grain patterns and colours. These variations are part of its charm.

What is the best direction to lay wood flooring?

Lay planks parallel to the room’s main light source or the most used entrance for the best aesthetic effect. Practicality and room layout may also influence the direction.
